Inclusive Hub

The Problem

A critical analysis and literature review of the Google Nest Hub revealed that there are several reasons for the exclusion of older adults due to there needs not being met. Firstly, contrast is an issue with elements of the touchscreen; Visual and hearing sense impairments are most likely to cause exclusion due to the Hubs reliance on visual touchscreen and verbal communication via Alexa. Secondly, many older adults misunderstand how to use or lack trust in the technology. Finally, the Hub is difficult to interact with unless the user is in close proximity to the device.

The Solution

Inclusive Google Nest Hub Touchpad with shortcut keys added to work alongside the existing touchscreen and provide a more familiar means of interaction.

Smart Wearable

Smart wearable device to be worn around the users neck. Provides a direct link the the Hub from around the house via Bluetooth.

Smart Wearable

Internal speaker and the inclusive hub are linked via Bluetooth. The smart wearable can vibrate and provide additional sounds to provide information directly to the user without the need to be close to the hub. LEDs inside the device can emit light to provide an additional means of viewing information. Colours link to directly to the colours of the Hub. For example, an incoming call would light up as green on both the Hub and smart wearable. Shortcut buttons for key features will be provided on the back of the smart wearable. These include a help/emergency, volume and on/off button.

Inclusive Hub

Central shortcut buttons used to quickly navigate to key parts of the Hub without having touch the touchscreen. Coloured icons are linked to the smart wearable.

Easy to twist volume dial used to increase or decrease the volume of the speaker.

High contrast grey buttons with white text and icons. Oversized font and soft touch material for increased visibility and ease of use.

Help button can be used to contact the Google help team for assistance with the device. Can also be used in case of emergencies to ask for medical assistance.

Sticker that reminds elderly users to talk to the hub and ask questions in case they forget.
