Garden Tool Harness

The Project

University/Gtech sponsored project with the aim of developing a support system to promote neutral posture when using garden tools. The new concept aims improve garden tool user experiences, enabling use of the product for hours while minimising fatigue and stress to the user.

The Problem

Garden tools often place heavy loads on elderly users lower back, arms and neck muscles. This can cause the users to feel uncomfortable and in pain when performing hedge trimming and grass trimming.

The Solution

A load bearing backpack support system that distributes weight through the user hips. The device by takes the weight through an overhead pole and wire and distributes it through the hips. Distributing the majority of the weight at the hips puts less load on the users lower back, arm and neck muscles. This should make users feel more comfortable and relaxed when performing hedge trimming and grass trimming.

Internals

The garden tool is attached to the spring loaded wire using a ABS and aluminium alloy carabiner and a fabric strap. A spring loaded and balancing wire mechanism is used to hold the tool weight and distribute the weight at the hips. A sheet aluminium backplate provides a stable and lightweight base for all components to be attached to. An outer casing is used to store additional outdoor tools and protect the inner components from external damage. A steam pressed and hollow bamboo tube is used to guide the spring loaded wire towards the top of the pole.
